In Richard Donners original vision of Superman II, the Man of Steel faces his greatest challenge yet Three villainous outcasts, Non, Ursa, and their leader, General Zod, are freed from the Phantom Zone only to wreak havoc, devastation, and chaos unto Earth. While this occurs, Clark Kent and Superman, now revealed to Lois as one and the same, begins a forbidden romance with her that ends with the extinguishing of his powers as Earths greatest savior for the woman he loves, all despite his father, Jor Els warnings. Meanwhile, Supermans arch nemesis, Lex Luthor, has escaped from prison with the help of Miss Teschmacher. After discovering the Fortress of Solitude, and learning of the Three Deviant villains, Luthor rushes to aid them in their attempt at World Domination and revenge on Superman. It all boils down to an epic battle in which Revenge, Love, and a Legacy between Father and Son culminate. Directed By Richard Donner. The Reviews for Superman II 1. Reviewed bythemysteriousx. Vote 91. 01. 0For those who are into the comic book movie craze today, this one isone of the best comic y movies from the beginning of the summerblockbuster heyday. The original Superman is really an excellent filmwith solid, honest direction by Richard Donner. Donner shot around halfof this sequel and his scenes are all excellent Note Every Gene. Hackman scene was shot by Donner Hackman refused to return toproduction after Donner was fired. There is still much hope that Donners footage will re surface. Mostimportantly of all there are vital scenes with Marlon Brando returningas Supermans father, Jor El and giving his life to save his son andsave the planet from the evil villains he vanquished from Krypton. Itwould also be interesting for audiences to see the difference between. Donners scenes and the ones re shot by Lester. The characters are great. Superman, played by Christopher Reeve, is insolid form and he and Lois are given the opportunity to enhance theirrelationship from the original story. Jackie Cooper is once again greatas Perry White, the chief editor of the Daily Planet. What makes this movie move is the villains. Gene Hackman is funnier andstill up to no good and the villains from Krypton are menacing. Hisdialogue is truly witty and Hackmans timing is perfect. Terence Stampis the power hungry General Zod, out for revenge against the son of. Jor El. Stamp plays it straight and his scenes directed by Donner showa true megalomaniac. Jack OHalloran is solid as the hulking Non. Best of all is Sarah Douglas as the cold and evil Ursa in a trulyunderrated performance. She is the most curious and most interesting ofthe bunch. She collects badges as trophies for her conquering of earth, wearing them to mock male hierarchy. Ursa seems to be a forerunner ofall of the sexy female superwomen today, but her role is not overstatedand stale. She is not given gratuitous cleavage shots or anything ofthe sort. Ursa is a beautiful vamp and a tease, and if anything we wishshe would have more screen time. Sarah Douglas constantly gives ushints as to Ursas wishes, and we can only try to surmise what evilplans she is up to. The music is John Williams score from the first film, but useddifferently. Not sure if much of the music is original. Ken Thorne doesa good job here of accenting cuts with Williams original scoreWilliams too refused to return after Donner was fired. Some greatcues are Superman returning to fight the villains, which is wonderfullyheroic Ursas shocking appearance to both the astronauts on the moona violent scene that uses the darkest motifs from Krypton in the firstfilm and the whole Metropolis battle in the end, which is wellsupported by the music. The effects are very good for 1. I keep reading how people areunhappy and always apologize for the FX in any movie more than a coupleof years old. This one is solid and for the film it serves, does well. The only major goof is when Superman delivers the American Flag at theend The water fountain in front of the White House is clearly a modelwith frozen bursting water The scene in the de powering chamber isnot well handled either. Overall, this is a very entertaining film, and really amazinglyconsidering it is obviously the work of two directors. Of all the comicbook movies made from the 6. Superman, the first two Batmans. Supermans 3 and 4 were really poor. It is too bad that Christopher. Reeve did not make more good Superman films. This one has some camp, but its way too entertaining and its the only sequel to still havethe flavor of the original. And please, lets see a special edition DVDwith all of the missing Richard Donner footage Reviewed by. Philip King. Vote 91. Not many films from the 7. The fact that thisfilm has a great story as well as some of the best special effectsavailable in the 1. If youare reading this thread and have not seen this film you must certainlybe from another planet. I will not spoil this film by telling you the plot or anything thathappens in the film as others more worthy of my name filmspoilerhave done. I will only say that this film joins the very fewTerminator 2, Back to the future 2, Final Destination 2 sequels thatare as good as, if not better than, there prequels. I only hope thatthe 2. Superman Returns is 3. PS Above comments written by someone old enough to remember the mucholder Rocket Man TV seriesReviewed by. TheMovieCat. Vote 81. I have a confession to make. I love Superman II. Such innocent, almostniave, filmmaking, it personifies the term family entertainment and is,simply, great fun to watch. Other superheroes have floundered at the box office, and maybe this is to dowith lack of affinity between the makers and the source material. Certainly, the Superman films are tongue in cheek but never so that theyredisrespectful to their content or their audience. The Crow was a goodexample of the graphic novel set, and the Batman series did well under theunderrated Michael Keaton, but floundered under the flat Val Kilmer andincreasingly childish set pieces. The less said about Batman and Robin thebetter. Of course, Superman had his own Batman and Robin in the guise of Superman. VI The Quest For Peace, a movie made four years after the third and withseemingly a fraction of the budget. But Superman II was the series at itspeak. The theme music, a startling Star Wars sound a like by John Williams, fades to edited recaps of the previous film. These involve Superman as ababy being sent from the destruction of his home planet and are cleverlyspliced together so as to avoid having to pay Marlon Brando any moreroyalties. Yet we do see Brandos hand. Surely thats worth half amillion. Kryptonian villains, about to beaccidentally released by Superman in a h bomb explosion. This was still in the days when films were properly constructed to allow fora genuine build up, a fully formed middle and a proper end. Even minorplayers, such as Perry White Jackie Cooper have great lines andcharacterisation thrusted upon them. This may be just a fun movie, but itis lovingly put together, not thrown together as many films are. All theactors are wonderful, Christopher Reeve is just right as Superman, Margot. Kidder is the definitive Lois Lane despite almost drowning in soft focusfor her close ups and Gene Hackman is, of course, absolutely hilarious as. Lex Luthor. But my favourite player in this sequel is Terence Camp as General Zod. Terence plays Zod exactly the same as he plays Bernadette in The Adventuresof Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and makes great work of the lead villainthat must be, in Hollywood circles, always English. Why do you say thesethings when you know I will kill you for it he minces to Hackman withgreat effect. Of course, now twenty years old, this film is less Youll believe a man canfly than Youll believe a man can swing on wires in front of anunconvincing backdrop but this is still wonderful entertainment. Maybe themiddle section, with Clark getting cut to ribbons after being thrown througha plate glass window is a little violent, as is the confrontation between. Superman and the trio of villains. Theres also the nagging feeling thatthis section is the biggest single example of product placement ever seen onfilm.
