Replacing the window regulator and motor is not particularly a difficult procedure but it does involve some detailed steps to make sure that the window works properly. The first step in replacing either the regulator or the power window motor is to remove the door panel See Figure 2. At the upper rear edge of the door is a small plastic reflector. Under this reflector is a small Phillips head screw. Carefully pry off the reflector as it is a bit fragile and remove the screw underneath See Figure 3 and Figure 4. Next, move to the front upper part of the door and use a small flat head screwdriver to pry around all the edges of the door handle surround panel. Once the panel is loose, carefully remove it See Figure 5 and Figure 6. Not only do we have high quality power window motor replacement parts, well show you how to install it yourself Over 5000 auto repair videos. Move on to the bottom of the door panel and use the screwdriver to pry out the door light assembly and unplug the electrical connection. Set the light aside See Figure 7. Torx screws securing the front door pull area of the door panel to the door See Figure 8. Now youre ready to pry the door panel off the door. Start at the upper rear side and stick a large flat head screwdriver in between the door panel and the door. It should take just a little bit of force to pop the door panel off. See Figure 9 Work your way around the lower edge of the door first, and pull the door panel straight off the top panel. Keep in mind that you will need to maneuver the door panel up and off of the door lock button. With the panel removed, you will see the large oval hole in the door that allows access to the internal components See Figure 1. At the upper front of the door, youll see three small Phillips screws securing the door handle assembly to the door. Youll need to remove these in order to access one of the 1. See Figure 1. 1 and Figure 1. Bmw Mini Window Regulator Removal When Broken' title='Bmw Mini Window Regulator Removal When Broken' />Once removed, let the door handle assembly hang free. The window glass is secured to the regulator rails with two interesting looking cog shaped pegs. These pegs arent easily visible from outside the door. Ive taken a few pictures with the glass and regulator assemble free of the door to illustrate how the whole assembly is held together See Figure 1. Figure 1. 4. In the factory manual, BMW specifies the use of a specialized tool that grips the outside of the peg in order to remove it, however you can use a 5mm hex key in the center of the peg to loosen it and simply thread it off by hand See Figure 1. EHow Auto gets you on the fast track with repair, maintenance, and shopping advice. Whether youre jump starting a battery or insuring a new car, we can help. Figure 1. 5. The key here is to lower the window just enough to be able to fit the hex key in the center of the peg. It took me a few tries to get it positioned exactly where I could remove the pegs without trouble See Figure 1. With the pegs removed, remove the window glass from the top of the door frame. It should come out easily through the top channel with a little maneuvering. If you feel any force holding it in or any binding, STOP and recheck that both pegs are removed and the glass isnt hung up on anything inside the door panel See Figure 1. Set the glass aside in a safe place for the time being. Look towards the front panel of the door and remove the three T2. Torx screws that secure the window motor to the door See Figure 1. Up inside the top edge of the door are two large white clips that secure the window regulator cables inside the doors. These are one of those things that are difficult to photograph due to the location, but assured they are up in there and can be a bit of a pain to remove. The clip has a hook on the top edge and a tension clip on the bottom. The idea here is to pry the clips free from the bottom. It can be done by hand, but unfortunately its all done by feel See Figure 2. Next, remove the 1. Figure 2. 1 and. Figure 2. These hold the window regulator rails along the top edge. Look underneath the door and remove the two 1. See Figure 2. 3 and Figure 2. Now remove the front regulator rail by moving the front upper edge towards the oval access panel See Figure 2. It will take a bit of maneuvering, but you need to be able to access the electrical plug for the window motor. Just carefully work the rail loose until you can move it enough to reach the plug on the motor. Press the release tab and slide the plug off See Figure 2. Figure 2. 5. At this point, you should easily be able to completely remove the front rail from the door. Look at the rear of the door and remove the small black clip that holds one of the window cables to the door See Figure 2. You should now be able to remove the rear window regulator rail like the front. Just angle it enough to remove it from the door See Figure 2. The new window regulator will come with two 1. T2. 0 Torx screws for securing the motor to the new gearbox. Set these screws aside for the time being See Figure 2. Now, look at the old regulator assembly. The window motor is sandwiched in between a plastic frame and the gearbox. The upper frame acts as an adapter panel to secure the motor to the gearbox and at the same time, provide a mounting surface for the motor to the door. Remove the three T2. Torx screws and remove both the upper frame and the window motor See Figure 2. Figure 3. 0. Fit either the old motor or a new motor to the gearbox on the new window regulator gearbox. The gearbox has a splined shaft which will be a tight fit, but will slide in with just a little force. Keep the relative position of the motor on the old gearbox in mind when placing it on the new gearbox See Figure 3. Figure 3. 2. Now fit the mounting frame over the motor it only goes on one way and install the new T2. Torx screws. The screws are designed to cut the threads into the plastic holes on the gearbox as you thread them in, so use caution and make sure that the screws are centered See Figure 3. Now, take the front rail of the new window regulator with the motor installed and carefully position it inside the door. Like before, you will have to angle the rail to get it in. I suggest starting with the bottom edge first and slide it back far enough so that you can reconnect the harness going to the window motor See Figure 3. Now, rotate the rail upwards so that you can see the top of the new rail line up with the hole in the door. Thread in the new 1. See Figure 3. 5. Place the lower part of the rail on the plastic foot at the bottom of the inside of the door. From the outside, loosely thread the lower 1. The motor adapter plate holes should now line up with the holes in the door. Screw in the three T2. Torx screws to secure the motor to the door. Now take the rear regulator rail and like the front, angle it so that you can first fit in the bottom edge, then rotate it up so that you can thread the 1. Porsche 9. 11 Carrera Window Regulator and Motor Replacement 9. Have you gotten tired of having to open your door and get out to retrieve your burger at the drive thru window Is your roof stuck up because the window is broken and the car wont let you open the roof without the window rolling down Perhaps its time to replace or clean your window regulator or install a new power window motor. Nothings better than driving in your 9. Carrera with the windows down on a nice sunny day. Having a broken window regulator can surely put a damper on that. The first step in replacing either the regulator or the power window motor is to remove the door panel see Pelican Technical Article Porsche 9. Carrera Door Panel Removal. Make sure that you eliminate the power window switch as a potential problem before you start tearing into your door. Double check all the fuses that control the power windows, and swap out the relays to make sure that there isnt a problem with them. If one of the windows works and the other doesnt, then chances are that its the window motor or the window switch. The switches themselves are often faulty, which can sometimes make this an easy fix. On the 9. 96, test the switch by removing it from the center console, and swap it with one that is working. On the 9. 97 the door panel has to come off to test the switch. If there is any noise coming from the door clicks and whines and the window isnt moving, then its quite obvious that the motor is fine, but the regulator needs to be repaired. If your window is not dropping down when you pull open the door handle, then you probably have an issue with the electrical switch that is integrated into the handle itself. See Project 7. 8 for more details on replacing the handle and that switch. For details on removing the door panel, see Pelican Technical Article Porsche 9. Carrera Door Panel Removal. On the 9. 96, when you have the door panel removed, you can view the regulator. The 9. 97 have an inner panel so you will have to watch the actual window. With your fingers clearly out of the way, roll down the window until its about 7. Observe what is happening the goal here is to figure out if the motor or the regulator needs replacing. If there is no movement, then the motor is suspect. If the motor moves or clicks, then your regulator probably needs to be replaced. Remove the motor and then the regulator. With the regulator detached from the door frame and the window, you should test the motor. With your hands out of the way of the motor, carefully press lightly on the window switch and see if the motor moves properly. If the motor doesnt move at all, then it probably is worn out, assuming that youve checked the window switch check the voltage to the motor when you press the window switch to see if its getting 1. V. Before you reinstall the window, I recommend that you inspect and replace the front window channel guide if its worn. This is the channel that guides the front of the window as it is raised and lowered by the regulator. Also worth replacing are the window slot seals if they are worn out. These inner and outer window scrapers keep water from dripping down into the recesses of the door. You should also grease all of the moving parts of the regulator the slides, the motor, the gears, etc. Before you close everything up inside your door, its a wise idea to test the proper operation of the window. With your fingers clearly out of the way, hook up the power connections to the window motor, and try to raise and lower the window. Also verify and adjust the stop positions of the window once you have reinstalled the regulator see Figure 6. There are screws located on the regulator that control these stop positions. If the power is disconnected from the car, the power windows lose their reference point for the closed position and need to be re initialized. With the convertible top fully closed, press the up button on each window and then continue pressing down for about five more seconds. On the 9. 97 you need to hold the switch in both the up and down position twice to reinitialize the system. For the 9. 96. Figure 1. The first step in checking the proper operation of your window is to verify that the window switches are working. Remove the two screws in the coin tray inset, and then pull out the assembly. If one window works and the other does not, try swapping the switches with each other. Replacement is easy, they snap out the back in the direction of the green arrow after releasing the tab inside with a small screwdriver. Large Image Extra Large Image. Figure 2. Heres a photo of a brand new regulator. Compared to the old days, modern window regulators are an advanced design, incorporating the cables, gears, and rails into a single assembly. The blue arrow shows where the motor bolts to the regulator. Action Replay Code Manager here. The white arrow points to where the lower edge of the window mounts to the regulator. The orange arrows show the adjustmenttightening screws for the window clamps. The purple arrow shows the height adjustment points for the window see Figure 6. Convert Psx Iso To Ps3 Pkg S more. Raise the window all the way up and stick a screwdriver in the door latch mechanism to trick the car into thinking the door is fully closed. This will keep the window in the top elevated position see Frame A of Figure 6. Pry off the rubber plugs that cover the access holes green arrow. Removal of the window motor is fairly easy. Disconnect the electrical harness connection blue arrow. Then remove the three nuts that hold the motor to the door. Push the motor into the door and pull it down so that you can access the studs that you just took the nuts off of. Remove the three studs purple arrow shows one of them they are what hold the motor and the regulator together. Finally, pull the motor off of the regulator inset photo, upper left. Large Image Extra Large Image. Figure 5. With the motor disconnected and detached, removal of the regulator is a snap. Disconnect the four mounting points for the regulator green arrow and it should slide out of the lower part of the door. On the very bottom surface of the door, you need to remove the two inner door plugs to reveal the mounting nuts orange arrow. Large Image Extra Large Image. Figure 6. Window adjustment can be a bit tricky. A Trick the door into thinking its closed by putting a short screwdriver into the lock mechanism. The window should raise about 1. B With the roof up, push the door near to being closed and measure the distance that the top of the window is located above the bottom edge of the seal. This should be about 2mm or so. C Make sure that the glass is aligned properly left to right in the holding clamps. The edgecorner of the glass should be aligned with the edge of the aluminum clamp purple arrow. To align the left right angle of the window, use the slot indicated by the green arrow only the rear slot is adjustable. D Check the distance that the window sits into the seal by using small pieces of Post It notes affixed to the window. Open the door and measure the distance from the top of the Post It notes to the top of the window. This should be about 4mm.
